Scope and Contents

Reproduction of the medal that was awarded to Roald Amundsen on January 21, 1927 by the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society and the American Museum of Natural History. It was to commemorate the Polar flight in 1925 and the Transpolar flight in the dirigible "Norge" on 1926. The original medal was made by Tiffany and Co., and it was donated to the American Museum of Natural History on Septemeber 9, 1972.

Physical Description

Reproduction of a medal for exhibit. It is made of aluminum. One side depicts a globe map, and, on the rim, it reads "Kings Bay-North Pole. Point Barrow- Teller. 72 Hours. 3393 Miles. 11-13 May 1926." On the other side, the design shows the dirigible "Norge" with "Roald Amundsen" written in the middle. Written on the rim are the words "First Crossing of the Polar Sea. Under Leadership of Roald Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth." This side probably also includes the words "Dummy" or "Dupe" to indicate it is a reproduction.
