Woven into the narrative of the American Museum of Natural History’s story are relationships developed over time connecting people, scientific expeditions, exhibitions, specimens and artifacts, and Museum departments. Explore the rich history and make your own discoveries.

Research Library | Authorities

The American Museum of Natural History Library has developed standardized vocabularies – authorities – to describe, and codify the names of Museum-related people, events, collections and exhibits. These descriptions can be explored through browsing categories such as people, expeditions and exhibitions. These Museum-specific descriptions provide the background and structure for documenting the Museum’s history. Links to related archival material allow researchers to discover relevant, primary source material from the AMNH Library and Archives (and beyond) through an interconnected system.

The Research Library’s Authorities effort has been generously supported through funding from the Council on Library and Information Resources, the Leon Levy Foundation and the Achelis & Bodman Foundation.
