Bushland revels

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 8
Scope and Contents

Australian ornithologist R. T. Littlejohns spent four years in the bush filming the beautiful lyrebird, resulting in this rare footage of the bird's behavior. A female lyrebird and her chick are the initial focus of the film; the mother bird is seen gathering food for the chick; later the young bird leaves the nest. The focus then shifts to the male lyrebird and his spectacular display behavior. A complete bird song, comprised of many imitative calls, is featured on the film's soundtrack.

Cameroun

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 21
Scope and Contents This film, made by the French government while Cameroon was still under French trusteeship, shows the dances of people of the southern provinces of Akonolinga, Yaounde, Doume, and Batouri. Details of clothing, ornaments, hair styles, and the xylophone that provides the music for the dances are shown. Catalina under the sea

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 127

Off the coast of California, the Catalina Islands offer excellent underwater scenes of plants and creatures. In a live underwater broadcast, the first ever produced, Charles Collingwood puts on his diving suit and dives with Ken Norris, oceanographer at Marineland in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. They discuss plants, such as a kelp forest, and much of the examination is centered on the type of underwater photographic equipment used in this unique broadcast.

Central African Expedition

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 145
Scope and Contents Filmed during AMNH Central African Expedition, 1948. The film material taken on the AMNH Central African Expedition, 1947-1948, is unedited, raw footage. The five-month-long expedition, led by James Lippitt Clark, AMNH director of preparation and installation, is well-documented in field notes and reports. It is not reflected in the film that the expedition moved haphazardly back and forth among the countries visited: Kenya, Uganda, Belgian Congo (now Zaire), and French Equatorial Africa...

The Central Asiatic Expeditions : Peking

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 150
Scope and Contents Filmed during the AMNH Third Asiatic Expedition to China and Mongolia, 1921-1930. Film brought from the U.S. was intended for recording the expedition, but some precious film was used to photograph Peking (now Beijing), the site of the expedition's headquarters. Because of the need to conserve film, this film is choppy, but provides a record of the city in the 1920s. The varied modes of transport are shown: trolleys, ox carts, sedan chairs, rickshaws, camels, wheelbarrows, horsedrawn...
