Bird brains

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 87
Scope and Contents Robert Cushman Murphy, AMNH ornithologist, is a guest on this program. The topic under discussion is the intelligence of birds and their relative lack of intelligence in relation to other creatures. Demonstrations in the studio include live specimens and models, with a presentation of performing African lovebirds. Murphy argues that, despite claims that species such as talking parrots, parakeets, and mynas are intelligent, most birds rank low in intelligence, usually just above reptiles....

Birds of paradise and spiders (beauty and the beast)

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 95
Scope and Contents SEGMENT 1: Birds of Paradise. Ernest Thomas Gilliard, AMNH curator of birds, joins Charles Collingwood to discuss birds of paradise as examples of beauty. Gilliard led an expedition to New Guinea in 1953-54 to study the birds of paradise, found almost exclusively in New Guinea. Their uses in native costume are shown. A large photographic blow-up of the birds is used as a backdrop for the discussion in the studio. SEGMENT 2: Spiders. Demonstrating the beauty and the beast in nature, this...

Birds of Peru and northern Chile

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 17
Scope and Contents

In 1953 and 1954, Robert Cushman Murphy, AMNH ornithologist, filmed bird colonies of coastal Peru and Chile and the outlying islands. The bird colonies darken the barren landscape by their sheer numbers. Nests and fledglings are everywhere. There is also a sequence devoted to the extraction and exportation of guano. Penguins, boobies, cormorants, gulls, and terns are seen.

Bottom of the world

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 18
Scope and Contents Filmed during the AMNH South Georgia Island Expedition, 1912-1913. Robert Cushman Murphy, AMNH ornithologist, introduces this film; he presents a map of Antarctica and explains that he went to South Georgia in 1912 for the AMNH while a staff member of the Brooklyn Museum. In South Georgia's Cumberland Bay, a whaling station is filmed, as well as humpback whales swimming in the surrounding sea. Jolly penguins are shown and their life is described by Murphy. Also seen are Cape pigeons, sooty...

Buddhism

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 126
Scope and Contents The setting for this broadcast is a Buddhist temple in Farmingdale, New Jersey, in a community where 160 Tibetan political and religious refugees have settled. Buddhist rituals, customs, and special New Year's day celebrations are observed as the community celebrates its freedom. Geshe Wangyal, professor of...

Catalina under the sea

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 127
Scope and Contents

Off the coast of California, the Catalina Islands offer excellent underwater scenes of plants and creatures. In a live underwater broadcast, the first ever produced, Charles Collingwood puts on his diving suit and dives with Ken Norris, oceanographer at Marineland in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. They discuss plants, such as a kelp forest, and much of the examination is centered on the type of underwater photographic equipment used in this unique broadcast.

Central African Expedition

 Collection
Identifier: Film Collection no. 145
Scope and Contents Filmed during AMNH Central African Expedition, 1948. The film material taken on the AMNH Central African Expedition, 1947-1948, is unedited, raw footage. The five-month-long expedition, led by James Lippitt Clark, AMNH director of preparation and installation, is well-documented in field notes and reports. It is not reflected in the film that the expedition moved haphazardly back and forth among the countries visited: Kenya, Uganda, Belgian Congo (now Zaire), and French Equatorial Africa...
