Series II: Supplemental Material

 Series
Identifier: Archives Orn60

Scope and Contents

This series consists of secondary material from WSSE, the bulk of which was transcribed into or is a transcription of those volumes. Objects include some original journals and specimen lists, maps, original and carbon copies of typed transcriptions of the journals, which can serve as drafts or copies of the Series II volumes. Some creators of the handwritten bound source journals include Beck, Coultas and Macmillan. Journal entries and correspondence are largely reproduced in the bound volumes, and frequently identified in the folder title. Other material includes telegrams, photographs, magazines and miscellaneous administrative papers and correspondence between Museum personnel and the participants, including some material related to Ernst Mayr. Subjects primarily pertain to the expedition, specimens and collecting, activities of the France and its crew, and some information about the Whitney Hall of Oceanic Birds. Edwin Bryan’s chronology and summary of the Whitney Expedition journals is included here. Note that although Box 35 Folder 2 is included in this section of the finding aid, it is physically kept with the bound volumes for ease of access. Two volumes of the Logbook for the France are also included in this series. The boxes are are organized alphabetically by author. Titles are taken directly from folder inscriptions.
