Portrait of man with a beard sitting on red leather arm chair, lion head design on arm rest, holding open book in left hand. Wolfe was first President of A.M.N.H. 1869-1872, merchant and philanthropist. Support: Canvas. Frame: Gilt wood and gesso, foliate design, 57 3/4 x 51 7/8. Inscription: Frame plate "John David Wolfe/First President/of the/American Museum of Natural History/April 8, 1869 - May 17, 1872" On back in chalk "J D Wolfe." 1878 copy of earlier portrait. See Meeting of the Board of Trustees, February 19, 1879 and Minutes of the Board of Trustees, November 11, 1878.
