Lieutenant, U.S. Navy. Collected Tlingit art intensively, but only those pieces no longer used by the people, and carefully recorded the history of each piece. Author of several works on Northwest Coast Indians, some of which were published as part of the Publications of the Jesup North Pacific Expedition, a subseries of the Memoirs of the American Museum of Natural History.

Some parts are in more than one version.
Chapter 9 includes photographs of weapons, cut out and pasted alongside the text. The material on gambling also includes a set of gambling sticks (AMNH Dept. of Anthropology, acc. no. 16/9383)
Microfilm lacks a section of Chapter, part 2, entitled: Yakutat kwan. Library has 2 photocopies of this 14-leaf ms., one in stacks (E99.T6E462) and another in Ms.
