 Person

Biographical Note

Maureen O’Leary is a Professor at Stony Brook University in the Department of Anatomical Sciences in the School of Medicine, as well as a joint faculty member in the Department of Geosciences, and a member of Stony Brook's Interdepartmental Doctoral Program in Anthropological Sciences. At the American Museum of Natural History, O’Leary is a Resident Research Associate in the Department of Vertebrate Paleontology. Her O’Leary Lab focuses on comparative anatomy, software development for accessing anatomical data to understand evolutionary history, and going on fossil expeditions. The Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University gave her the Excellence in Senior Research Award in 2019.

Dr. O’Leary researches mammal evolution, sub-Saharan vertebrate evolution, combined data phylogeny reconstruction, systematic biology, and vertebrate paleontology. She has recently focused on the evolution of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) from terrestrial land mammals, using fossils to facilitate phylogeny reconstruction. Her field work to northeastern Mali’s Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks exemplifies her affinity for expeditionary research. Her web application MorphoBank allows scientists to share and archive taxonomic data and collaborate on the Tree of Life (phylogeny).
