Historical Note

The AMNH Department of Mammalian Palaeontology sent a third expedition into the Rocky Mountain region in 1893, led by J. L. Wortman. As the year prior, they continued working in the San Juan Basin making a significant collection of skulls and fossil mammals in Bridger Basin, Wyoming. Most notably, they found a complete skeleton of a large carnivore, the size of a tiger. The fossils were on display in two cases in the hallway of the Geological floor. (1, p. 13) O. A. Peterson, J. W. Gidley and Tom Nelson were part of the expedition team. (2) The Museum sent Peterson into the Uinta in the autumn of 1893, but owing to restrictions upon the Uncompahgre Indian Reservation he returned after having secured only a few fossils. (3)
