AMNH President, Gardner Stout's wife. Clare Stout was an explorer and malacologist. She had a significant role in the development of the American Museum of Natural History, Hall of Mollusks and Mankind. In the early 1970s, she participated in an expedition to the Society Islands to examine relics of prehistoric Polynesian society and collect fish and shell specimens
