Physician and naturalist

Served as naturalist with several U.S. surveys and in 1891 he visited Alaska as the United States Bering Sea Commmissioner and made a study of the fur seal on Pribylov Islands. Merriam headed the United States Biological Survey (Fish and Wildlife Service, dept. of Interior)
