Summary

"Traditional Japanese Designs in Textiles, Stencils and Costumes: The Tom and Frances Blakemore Collection" was a touring exhibition of old Japanese textile stencils, period clothing and large textile items. More than 50 stencils were highlighted in the exhibit, the designs of which were drawn largely from mythological figures and nature. In addition to a selection of textiles and costumes, the exhibition featured a series of flat wooden figures dressed in textiles of the Meiji period. The items on display were collected by Thomas L. Blakemore and his artist wife, Frances, and were on view in Gallery 77 of the American Museum of Natural History from June 25 through October 1, 1981.
