Summary
The "Star of Sierra Leone" was an exhibition featuring the third largest diamond ever discovered. Uncut and weighing 968.9 carats, the diamond was discovered in the Diminco Mine in Sierra Leone. Dr. D. Vincent Manson, chairman and associate curator of the Department of Mineralogy, referred to it as a treasure for its intrinsic brilliance and scientific value. Owned by Harry Winston, after being intensively studied, the "Star" underwent expert cutting. The diamond was on view on the second floor in the Roosevelt Memorial Hall of The American Museum of Natural History from January 26 to February 11, 1973.
