1961 November 5 - 1962 January 14
Summary
"Birds of Greenland" was an exhibition of watercolors by the Danish artist, Gitz-Johansen. Among the birds depicted were the Ringed Plover, Greenland Rock-Ptarmigan, Fulmar Petrel, Pink-footed Goose, Greenland Mallard, Pintail, Ivory-Gull, Gray Sea Eagle, Gyrfalcon and the Snow Bunting. Dr. Dean Amadon, Chairman of the Museum's Department of Ornithology, pointed out that Gitz-Johansen was not a scientific observer of natural history, rather an artist who sought the personality of the bird portrayed. The exhibition was sponsored by the Embassy of Denmark and was circulated by the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service. The paintings were on view in the first floor North American Mammal Corridor of the American Museum of Natural History starting November 5 1961 until January 14, 1962
