Scope and Contents

Depicts the interior of the Kilauea Volcano crater, with burning lava and smoke, with three men standing on dried lava rock. In gilt wood frame with linen matte, 38 x 47 cm.

Painting signed "T.R.P." and dated 1841 at lower right; based on a sketch made Nov. 22, 1840.

On verso of painting: 178, West crater of 'Kaluea Pele' from the 'Black Ledge.' TR Peale November 22, 1840. A176.5/12. On verso of frame: "P5."
