Scope and Contents SEGMENT 1: The $2,000,000 J. P. Morgan Gem Collection. Brian Mason, AMNH curator of physical geology and mineralogy, describes the museum's collection of gems, which consists of diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Mason discusses how these gems were cut and polished, using films produced by DeBeers Consolidated Mines Ltd. and E. J. Mauther. The reasons why the stones are so valuable are also examined. Abstract

Slides of minerals and gems. Some are close-up photographs showing texture and patterns. Twenty slides have a specimen number with no descriptive captions. Other images include cut and uncut gems. Two figures: Nephrite jade water buffalo from the Ming dynasty and "Kanzeon Bosatsu" Japanese Buddhist goddess of mercy by (K. Nakagawa). One image of the a display in the AMNH Hall of Gems.
