Adventure
Scope and Contents
The topic of discussion for this broadcast is the concept of adventure. After a brief examination of the various meanings of the word, three feature films are shown to illustrate different types of adventure. Robert Cushman Murphy, AMNH ornithologist, joins host Charles Romine to narrate the program. The first film shows carnivorous plants indigenous to bogs and marshes, especially the Venus's fly trap and pitcher plant, devouring insects. This film was made by Dr. Harlow of the New York State Division of Forestry. The second scene features mountain climber Gaston Rebuffat negotiating the underside of a ledge high in the Alps. Previous broadcasts with adventurers Sasha Siemel, Barnaby Conrad, Maurice Herzog, Bernard Hubbard, Armand Denis, and curators from the AMNH are discussed in an introduction to this section. Arne Sucksdorff's Swedish film The Great Adventure was made over two years and is a dramatic documentary of a fox and her family presented through the eyes of the cubs. Included is a sequence of foxes raiding a chicken coop and their subsequent pursuit.
