Correspondence and administrative papers, 1882-1925
Scope and Contents
The collection consists primarily of handwritten and typewritten correspondence, with some carbon copies, and of minimally processed papers, including administrative papers, charts, notes, lists, and receipts. Hovey corresponded with other scientists, with members of the public, and with scientific organizations. Topics include the acquisition and identification of rocks and invertebrate fossils for the museum's collections, preparation of exhibits, and budgeting and other administrative matters. There are also personal letters, and letters written on Hovey's behalf by geology curator Chester A. Reeds, especially after his death. Papers include manuscripts of Hovey's publications and those of several other researchers.

Processing Information
Papers in H682 were transferred to AMNH Library Special Collections in folders arranged according to non-consecutive numbers ranging from 1 to 1283, followed by unnumbered folders. For clarity, all folders were renumbered from 1 to 591.
