Biography

Born in Chicago on February 16, 1934, Ronald Sterne Wilkinson, Ph.D., was a science historian, entomologist, and environmentalist. Specializing in science history, Dr. Wilkinson received his bachelor’s degree in 1960 and Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1969. Between 1960 and 1966, he was a Ryder Scholar at the University of London, a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Harvard University, and a Fulbright Scholar at the University College in London. Moreover, Dr. Wilkinson was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society of London, and the Linnean Society. From 1966 to 1971, Dr. Wilkinson was the editor of The Michigan Entomologist, and he authored several articles related to entomology and the history of science. In 1970, Dr. Wilkinson began working as a science specialist in the Library of Congress (LOC) and became a senior specialist in 1990. In 1975, he was also appointed Associate in Bibliography at the American Museum of Natural History Library. Dr. Wilkinson retired from LOC after serving for 38 years. A few days later, on February 22, 2009, he died in his home. Throughout his life, Dr. Wilkinson developed an extensive collection of natural history books, personal papers, and memorabilia, much of which he bequeathed to the AMNH’s Library and the Entomology Department.
