Considered an expert on the taxonomy of marsupials, monotremes, bats and rodents, Hobart M. Van Deusen led several of the American Museum of Natural History's Archbold Expeditions, studying the geographic distribution and ecology of plant and animal life in Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia. Van Deusen was a curator emeritus at the museum, retiring in 1975
