Harry S. Tschopik was an Assistant Curator of Ethnology in the Department of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History. Before he became a curator at the museum, Tschopik did field work among the Aymara and other native communities of Peru. In 1952 he made an ethnic survey of Costa Rica and in 1953 he conducted an ethnic reconnaissance of the area of the upper Amazon River in Peru. He helped introduce new sound techniques in the museum's Hall of the Montana, making a composite recording of Peruvian jungle sounds
