Drew pencil portrait of John James Audubon. In 1843, Sprague served as an assistant to John James Audubon on an expedition up the Missouri River to collect information and images of western mammals, in preparation for The viviparous quadrupeds of North America. The American Museum of Natural History has artwork created by Sprague on that trip
