Biographical or Historical Note

Herbert Joseph Spinden was an anthropologist and authority on the Indians of the Americas. Spinden, as a specialist in ancient American art and history, solved the chronology of Mayan inscriptions with a day-to-day correlation of calendars that made it possible to recover the astronomical science of the Mayas. From 1909 to 1921, he was assistant curator of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History
