George Thornton Emmons was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He collected Tlingit art intensively, but only those pieces no longer used by the people, and carefully recorded the history of each piece. Author of several works on Northwest Coast Indians, some of which were published as part of the Publications of the Jesup North Pacific Expedition, a subseries of the Memoirs of the American Museum of Natural History. In 1918, Emmons sold Northwest Coast Indian art to the museum
