Summary
"Tribal Women of South Africa" featured photographs by Constance Stuart showing the life of the women of six South African tribes. Stuart documented their rapidly disappearing native traditions as many men have left for work in the cities. Among the women photographed were the Mujaji, the powerful Rain Queen of the Lobedu, a young Ndebele wearing an elaborate engagement costume and a Basuto woman grinding corn. The exhibition was on view in the Corner Gallery of the American Museum of Natural History from July 10 through September 7, 1953.
