Summary

"Beyond" was an exhibition of over 30 photographs from space captured by unmanned interplanetary probes. The exhibit featured photographs of four different extraterrestrial landscapes: the planets Mars and Venus as well as Jupiter's moons Europa and Io. Combining scientific detail and artistry, the exhibit was the result of work done by Michael Benson, writer, photographer and filmmaker. Benson spent years searching the archives of NASA and the European Space Agency to find images that he then processed and combined to create large-format composite views of the different landscapes. Planetary scientist Paul Geissler helped Benson produce some of the color images. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Museum's Hayden Planetarium, was the curator for the exhibit. Made possible by the Arthur Ross Foundation, the exhibit was on view in the IMAX Gallery of the American Museum of Natural History from April 14, 2007 through April 6, 2008.

Individuals and institutions involved in the creation of the exhibition: Neil deGrasse Tyson; Michael Benson; Paul Geissler.
