Summary
"Palms and Pomegranates: Traditional Dress of Saudi Arabia," was an exhibition of rare Saudi Arabian clothing ensembles. The exhibition of 30 complete costumes contained items from both private and public collections. The majority of the clothing was from the collection of Her Royal Highness Princess Haifa bint Faisal, wife of the then Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the U.S. Palms and pomegranates were among the traditional embroidery motifs on clothing. Also included in the exhibition were artifacts woven from palm fronds as well as a selection of traditional silver Arabian Bedouin jewelry. The exhibition was organized by the U.S. Committee for Saudi Arabian Cultural Heritage and was made possible by funds from the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia and a consortium of 35 American corporations. Consulting coordinator for the exhibition was Patricia Fiske, the then executive director of the U.S. Committee for Saudi Arabian Cultural Heritage. Laurel Kendall, then associate curator in the Department of Anthropology, was the Museum's curator for the exhibition. The exhibition was on view in Gallery 77 of the American Museum of Natural History from July 28 through October 29, 1989.
