1974 June 28 - 1975 March 10
Summary
"Children of Africa" was a teaching exhibition of photographs and slides depicting the activities of African children and children of African descent living in the United States, South America and the Caribbean. The unique heritage was demonstrated by some of the toys, games and books used by African children, as well as by exhibiting contemporary artworks showing them working, playing, learning and caring for others. Music and color slides of the nations in which children of African descent lived added to the mood of the exhibit. The exhibit was produced under the direction of African-American Studies in the Department of Education and was made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The exhibit was coordinated by Barbara Jackson, coordinator of African-American Studies, and a community group, Friends of African-American Studies, served as consultants. The exhibit was on view in the first-floor Education Gallery of the American Museum of Natural History from June 28, 1974 until March 10, 1975.
Individuals and institutions involved in the creation of the exhibition: National Endowment for the Humanities; El Museo del Barrio, New York City; Friends of African-American Studies; Barbara Jackson; Theresa Moore.
