Summary
"Recent Accessions from Africa" was an exhibition displaying 150 artifacts, including masks, wood carvings, metal work and richly embroidered textiles. The items were mostly from West Africa with a few from the Congo and East Africa and reflected the cultural richness of African life. Colin M. Turnbull, Assistant Curator of African Ethnology, stated the the pieces played significant roles in the spiritual life of the people. The objects were acquired from private collectors; Mr. and Mrs. Gaston T. deHavenon, Mr. Douglas Ross, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney de la Rue, Mr. John Young and Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Putnam; and were on view in the Corner Gallery of the American Museum of Natural History from June 15 until early Fall 1961,
