William Diller Matthew papers

Scope and Contents William Diller Matthew's notebooks, notes, correspondence and manuscripts. He worked at the AMNH for thirty-two years. His more than 250 publications deal with the morphology and classification of the Eocene mammals and later Cenozoic mammals. He was especially interested in horses and he made them a showpiece of evolution. Evolution was the one theme on which he constantly wrote whether dealing with descriptions or comparisons. Skinner died in Ainsworth, Nebraska in 1989, his wife, Marie, donated his 33 pocket notebooks or field notebooks dating from 1936 - 1980 and 13 black notebooks or box lists from 1938-1972. They are arranged in individual envelopes by date with short descriptions.
