Scope and Content note This particular collection refers to a promotional strategy implemented by the Hayden Planetarium. In 1949, in order to increase publicity for their space exhibit “Conquest of Space”, the Hayden Planetarium set up an “interplanetary-tour reservations desk” that would take reservations for the first trips into space. Archives from the former Richard S. Perkin Library, Hayden Planetarium. Includes administrative records, staff papers, programs and correspondence. Collections of staff papers from Robert R. Coles, Joseph Miles Chamberlain, Frank H. Forrester, James S. Pickering, Thomas D. Nicholson, Franklyn M. Branley, Kenneth L. Franklin, Mark R. Chartrand and Allen Seltzer.

Scope and Contents

Collection includes administrative records, reports, publications, correspondence, and materials related to construction and public relations. It also includes documents, audiovisual, and visual materials relating to exhibits and planetarium shows.

The majority of the material was transferred from the Perkins Library in the 1990s. The collection is in need of processing and subject to institutional restrictions.

Contains documents regarding planning the construction and operation of the original Hayden Planetarium, including reports on financing and estimated costs made by The American Museum of Natural History Planetarium Authority, New York State and the City of New York laws and deed documents created to authorize the planetarium construction.
