Biographical Note
Charles Whitney Gilmore (1874-1945) was the Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution. He began his career at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in 1901, when he discovered the skeleton of a young sauropod. In 1903, he was hired by the National Museum of Natural History to work on the O.C. Marsh collection that was accrued during the Bone Wars. In 1907, Gilmore headed his first expedition to Alaska to search for Pleistocene vertebrate fossils.
The year before he became Curator, Gilmore collected the fossil of a Diplodocus longus in Utah, which was displayed at the National Museum of Natural History in 1931. The 70-foot specimen was the most popular exhibit for the next 20 years. In 1924, the National Museum of Natural History appointed him as Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology. He led 16 expeditions during his time as Curator, mostly in Utah and Wyoming. Before retiring in 1945, he published 170 scientific papers and several monographs. Many dinosaurs were named in Gilmore’s honor.
