Biographical Note

Frank Walker Johnson (1909-1989) was born in St. Augustine, Florida and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a B.A. in Geology in 1934, and went to work in the Frick Laboratory, American Museum of Natural History as a Collector of Vertebrate Fossils from 1935-1936. From 1936 until his retirement in 1971 he worked for Standard Oil Co. (now Exxon Corporation) in various assignments as a Geologist, eventually holding roles as Deputy Manager of Exploration, Research Chairman, Senior Exploration Advisor before retiring in 1971. In 1972 Johnson began volunteering at the American Museum of Natural History, studying the late Tertiary stratigraphy of an area in north-central Nebraska in collaboration with the curator Morris Skinner.
