AMNH curator of geology, Hovey was named by AMNH to be Chairman of the “Committee in Charge” that supervised Crocker Land from New York. He headed north in 1915 to bring the men home, but was on the George B. Cluett when it got stuck in the ice and he ended up spending two years in the Arctic with the expedition team.
