Larsen-Rainey Expedition to Point Hope, Alaska (1939-1941)
Summary
Joint expedition of the University of Alaska and the Danish National Museum to conduct archaeological investigations in Point Hope and excavate material. Froelich Rainey and James L. Giddings, Jr. (Louis Giddings) represented University of Alaska and Helge Larsen represented the Danish National Museum. During this expedition, they discovered the remains of a former habitation in Ipiutak, and with it, remains of an older culture. In the summer of 1941, Harry L. Shapiro joined the excavating team and focused on burial grounds. The Voss Fund at the American Museum of Natural History supported Rainey and Shapiro respectively.
