Smithsonian African Expedition (1909-1910)

Scope and Contents This collection of prints were made by the AMNH from Kermit Roosevelt's original negatives documenting the 1909-1910 Smithsonian expedition to Eastern Africa led by his father, Theodore Roosevelt. The photo documenation was of particular interest to the museum as it also documents the week or so when the expedition was joined briefly by an AMNH expedition led by Carl Akeley to British East Africa with the intention of collecting elephants for the African Mammals Hall at the AMNH.
