Description
"The Horse," an exhibit on the enduring bond between horses and humanity, was on display at the American Museum of Natural History. The exhibit explored early interactions between horses and humans that eventually led to domestication, and showed how horses have, over time, influenced civilization including major changes in warfare, trade, transportation, agriculture, sports and many other facets of human life. The exhibition showcased fossils, models, dioramas, and cultural objects from around the world, including many from the Museum's collections. On view was a skeleton mount created by Samuel Harmsted Chubb, an anatomist and research associate at the Museum during the first half of the 20th century, which showed a display of a man trying to control a rearing horse. Also featured were images by British photographer Eadweard Muybridge, the first person to freeze the movement of a running horse into a series of still photographs. A life-size modern horse sculpture on view was created by artist Deborah Butterfield. Other highlights included large-scale photographs of cave paintings of horses and a re-creation of the archaeological site of Krasnyi Yar in northern Kazakhstan which shows early signs of horse domestication. The exhibit was organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York, in collaboration with the following institutions to which the exhibition traveled after it closed in New York: the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, United Arab Emirates; the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Gatineau-Ottawa; The Field Museum, Chicago; and the San Diego Natural History Museum. The exhibit was curated by Ross MacPhee, Curator, Department of Mammalogy, Division of Vertebrate Zoology, American Museum of Natural History; and co-curated by Sandra Olsen, Curator of Anthropology, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Supported by Rosalind P. Walter and the Eileen P. Bernard Exhibition Fund, the exhibit was on view in Gallery 4 at the American Museum of Natural History from May 17, 2008 through January 4, 2009.
