Charles Vaurie joined the American Museum of Natural History as a volunteer in 1942 and was appointed to Research Associate four years later in the Department of Ornithology. He became the Assistant Curator in 1956 and full Curator in 1967 until his retirement in 1972. Vaurie and his wife, former Patricia Wilson, traveled extensively in Mexico, Central American and the West Indies, where they collected insect specimens for the museum's collections
