Richard G. Van Gelder joined the American Museum of Natural History in 1956 as an assistant curator at the age of 27. He was the chairman of the museum's Department of Mammalogy in 1959, curator and curator emeritus from 1969 to 1986. Van Gelder was a specialist in the areas of taxonomy and evolution, and an authority on a wide range of animal life from African elephants and the Panamanian olingo to spotted skunks, fish-eating bats and Central Park squirrels
