- Zoologist, hired in 1900 to join the Jesup North Pacific Expedition. Norman G. Buxton and his assistant Aleksandr Akselrod
worked with Waldemar Bogoras and Waldemar Jochelson to collect zoological specimens for the museum. The expedition’s zoological
results were later published in 1902 by J. A. Allen with detailed references to Buxton’s field notes.
Norman G. Buxton was originally from and later returned to Johnstown, Ohio. He was the son of a prominent banker and attended
Stanford University in its early years. Buxton is said to have participated in a Smithsonian expedition to Point Barrow, Alaska
in 1886 and 1887 and contributed collections to the AMNH and later the Field Museum in Chicago. Buxton was hired in 1900 to
join the Jesup North Pacific Expedition as a zoologist. He and his assistant Aleksandr Akselrod collected mainly in the area
of Gichiga in northeastern Siberia, on the west coast of the Okhotsk Sea, and also at Marcova, on the middle Anadyr River,
6oo miles north of Gichiga. Buxton partnered with Bogoras and Jochelson in his collecting efforts.
