Exhibition. Opened September 3, 1968 and closed September 30, 1968. Located in the Grand Gallery at the American Museum of Natural History. "Rare Japanese Theater Masks " featured four nineteenth century Japanese theater masks.

Summary

"Rare Japanese Theater Masks " featured four nineteenth century Japanese theater masks. The masks, part of the Museum's collection, were used in the Kyogen, or comic, Theater of Japan. The masks were made of carved wood covered with a lacquer or gesso finish and depicted various comic characters of the Kyogen. This Exhibit of the Month was on view in the 77th St. Foyer of The American Museum of Natural History from September 3 through September 30, 1968. They were to go on permanent display in the new Hall of Asia which was scheduled to open in 1971.
