Summary
"Hopi Kachina: Spirit of Life" was an exhibition celebrating the Hopi tricentennial. Highlights included two kiva murals from the site of Awatovi in Arizona depicting scenes from ceremonies in which Hopi were costumed as kachinas, their deities. Also on display were 200 artifacts including 150 small wooden kachina carvings known as tihus. The exhibition was organized by the California Academy of Sciences with the cooperation of the Hopi and was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and funding from the Santa Fe Railway Company, Fireman's Fund Insurance Company Foundation, The Hearst Foundation, Transamerica Corporation and the Pinewood Foundation. The exhibit was on view in Gallery 3 of the American Museum of Natural History from February 9 through May 8, 1981.
