Summary
"Afro-American Arts from the Suriname Rain Forest" was an exhibition featuring the Suriname Maroons. More than 350 representative samples of Maroon culture were on display including carvings, textiles and metalwork. The artifacts were gathered from the collections of the American Museum of Natural History, the Herskovitz Collection of the Hamburgisches Museum fur Volkerkunde in Hamburg, the Musee de l'Homme in Paris, the Suriname Museum in Paramaribo, and the University Museum of Archeology in Cambridge. Anthropologists Sally and Richard Price of Johns Hopkins University organized the exhibition with the participation of the Museum of Cultural History at the University of California at Los Angeles and support of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The exhibit was on view in Gallery 3 of the American Museum of Natural History from October 28, 1981 through January 24, 1982.
