Summary
"POMPEII AD79" was an exhibition of art and artifacts from the ruined city. The 350 objects on view included examples of almost every type of artifact discovered in the buried city drawn primarily from the collections of the National Archeological Museum in Naples and the Antiquarium at Pompeii. There were examples of gold jewelry, silverware, sculpture, mosaics, frescoes, tools, pottery and cooking vessels. These objects were presented in the context of how Pompeiians used them, according to Thomas D. Nicholson, the Museum's director at the time. The exhibition was arranged through the cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Culture. It was originally organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Xerox Corporation. The exhibition was on view in Gallery 3 of the American Museum of Natural History from April 22 through July 31, 1979.
