Exhibition. Opened in May 11, 1977 and closed August 7, 1977. Located in Section 1A, Floor 1 in Gallery 77 at the American Museum of Natural History. "Maps: Their Science and Their Art" was an exhibition of over one hundred maps, focusing on their variety, history, use and importance.

Summary

"Maps: Their Science and Their Art" was an exhibition of over one hundred maps, focusing on their variety, history, use and importance. The exhibit featured examples of rare and ancient maps, maps in current use, maps produced by computers, maps made from outer space and maps of the imagination. Highlights included the 1507 world map by Martin Waldseemuller, an original atlas by Gerhardus Mercator, an Aztec map and a Polynesian map. The selections in the exhibition came from the Library of The American Museum and the collections of the American Geographical Society, the United States Geological Survey and the New York Historical Society. Also on view were early and modern tools and devices used in map making and navigation. The exhibit was on view in Gallery 77 of the American Museum of Natural History from May 11 through August 7, 1977.
