Scope and Contents

The Department of Vertebrate Paleontology began as a new department of the American Museum of Natural History with the arrival of Henry Fairfield Osborn (1857-1935) as curator in 1891. The years following are marked with substantial collection activity and growth.

Early records of the Department of Paleontology were deposited at different times and in separate groupings, consisting of requisition records, and specimens borrowed, loaned and returned. Files have overlapping dates with duplicated records that may have come from a secretary's file in the department office or a department chairman's office. Box 1 (1926-1928), Box 2 (1929-1931), Box 3 (1931-1933), Box 4 (1932-1934), Box 5 (1934-1936), Box 6 (1936-1938), Box 7 (1939-1941), Box 8 (1942-1943). Box 9 (1903-1909) consists of listings and receipts of specimens borrowed, loaned and returned.
