Abstract

Phyllis La Farge Johnson was a writer and editor. She collaborated on a book with photographer Magdalena Caris titled Painted Walls of Mexico/Paredes Pintadas de Mexico. La Farge also wrote several children's books, noteably The Pancake King.

Phyllis La Farge volunteered at the American Museum of Natural History Library. Her work with the photographs taken in northern Mexico by Norwegian anthropologist Carl Lumholtz, led her to travel to Mexico. La Farge published an article in The Journal of the Southwest, "On the Frontier of Photography; Carl Lumholtz and the Kodak Snapshot Camera." She also contributed to the book Among Unknown Tribes: Rediscovering the Photographs of Explorer Carl Lumholtz. In February 2015 she traveled to the Zacatecas mountains in Mexico to prepare an exhibition on the Huichol Native Mexicans for the AMNH. She died on September 19th of the same year.
