Ermine and Vole (Diorama)

 Organization

Historical Note

The Ermine and Vole diorama is located on the first floor in the Hall of Small Mammals, part of the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. It was completed in 1962 and restored during the Hall’s renovation project in 2011-2012. The diorama depicts a scene in late August at Mount Katahdin, Baxter State Park, Maine, where the ermine is about to attack the unsuspecting northern red-backed vole. The background featuring Mount Katahdin was painted by James Perry Wilson. The botanical re-creations were modeled by foreground artist Tomas Newbery. The taxidermy was by James Hagenmayer.
