 Organization

Historical Note

The Collared Peccary diorama is located on the first floor in the Hall of Small Mammals, part of the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1962 and restored during the Hall’s renovation in 2011-2012. The collared peccary is a distant cousin of the domestic pig. The scene depicts two collared peccaries dining on the dry scrublands at the Chihuahuan Desert, Big Bend National Park, Texas. The background painter was Matthew Kalmenoff. The foreground with agave and prickly pear cactus was created by Raymond DeLucia. The taxidermy was done by Jonas Bros, Inc. (Windows on Nature, 2006)
