Historical Note
The Wapiti diorama is located on the first floor in the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was created in 1941 and was restored during the Hall’s renovation project in 2011-2012. The scene depicts a bull wapiti “bugling” during mating season near Trappers Lake, White River National Forest, Colorado. Three other wapiti graze nearby. The background was painted by James Perry Wilson. The foreground artist was George Petersen with G. Frederick Mason, Robert Scherer, and Charles Tornell assisting. The taxidermist was Robert Rockwell. (Windows on Nature, 2006)
